Site Description
Engels-2 is the primary garrison of Russian Long Range Aviation, hosting the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division equipped with Tu-160M Blackjack and Tu-95MS Bear-H strategic bombers. The base is the principal launch platform for Kh-101 and Kh-55 cruise missile strikes against Ukrainian territory. Following Ukrainian long-range drone strikes in December 2022 and 2023 that damaged aircraft and fuel infrastructure, a sustained hardening programme has been observed in archival imagery — including hardened aircraft shelters (HAS), blast revetments, and dispersal apron extensions. Located on the Volga River approximately 15 km southeast of the city of Engels (Saratov Oblast).
