Site Description
Fiery Cross Reef (Yongshu Jiao) is China's most capable military installation in the Spratly Islands, constructed on a reclaimed artificial island between 2014 and 2016. The facility includes a 3,125-metre runway capable of supporting all PLA aircraft types, a deep-water pier accommodating destroyers and supply vessels, underground fuel storage, hardened aircraft shelters for J-11B/16 fighters and H-6J bombers, and confirmed HQ-9B long-range surface-to-air missile deployments. Satellite imagery documented by CSIS AMTI confirms persistent aircraft presence and active use of all aviation infrastructure. The facility substantially extends PLA air and naval reach over the South China Sea, covering routes from Singapore to the Philippines.
